"Un-Label" Your Child Tips

Ten Suggestions for Parents from Mrs. Basset Hound
An excerpt from the children's book,
Buster B. Basset Hound, The Label Buster

If you would like to help your child live by The Label Buster Code of Honor, here are some suggestions from Mrs. Basset Hound:

    1. You should never label your child or call your child names. Instead, define your child by his/her strengths, not weaknesses.
    2. Help your child to overcome problems and difficulties without judgment.
    3. Reinforce the best qualities in your children every day to override any negative labels they may receive from others. When you instill good feelings in your children, it will help to give them a strong sense of pride in themselves and their abilities. This sense of pride will help them resist the negative labels. If they feel good about themselves and if they can come to you for positive reinforcement and reassurance, it will help them to feel stable and strong even in the face of adversity. If they have problems, they will know that they can trust you to help them, not ridicule them.
    4. If someone like a teacher or a doctor labels your child with attention or behavior problems, refuse the label. Instead, look for ways to help your child overcome the problem. Remind everyone you entrust your child to that they are there to help your child learn and grow. If there is a problem, you will work with them to help your child develop in areas where he or she needs the extra help. Explain that this is perfectly normal and expected, as we are not born knowing how to do everything.
    5. Explain to your children that everyone has to learn how to do things at first and that they will often need help.
    6. Teach your children to respect others as well as themselves. They will learn this best when their parents respect as well as protect them.
    7. Teach your child to evaluate others by looking for their best qualities and not to focus on other people's weaknesses.
    8. Teach your child that some people act like The Label Maker and that they should stay away from them or ignore their negative labeling behavior.
    9. Teach your child never to tease or call other children names. Remember the song, "Don't Label Me," is for everyone!
    10. Remember, you set a powerful example for your child. Children learn from their parents' actions. If you label people, your child will emulate you.
