There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of
weight loss plans available. Some require you to have a membership to obtain the
information needed to follow the plan. Some require attendance at meetings. Still others require you
to buy the food that is allowable to eat, directly from them.
I have seen many advertisements on television and in
magazines promoting these diet plans. There is a disclaimer in small print, at the bottom of the
page, saying “The results are not usual or expected”. Why would I want to buy the foods, attend the meetings
or join their membership if the results are not usual or expected? Do we all think we will be that
one person who does get those results even though they are not usual or
expected?
The problem I have with these other diet plans is that
you have to become committed to them. If you do lose weight, do you gain it all back if you stop the
program? Who wants to continue going to meetings or buying their food
forever?
My goal for my patients is to help find the medical
reasons why they cannot lose weight or keep weight off. I want to teach them how to discover what
they need to do to lose weight. Then if they do gain weight again, they know exactly what to do the
next time. Yes, everyone has to continue to make choices that keep the weight off or else the
weight can return. However, if there are medical conditions interfering with the weight loss and
those medical problems are properly treated, it should be easier to maintain the weight
loss.
Two of the most common medical reasons I find for weight gain are
hormone imbalances such as hypothyroidism and allergies. Some people think they are depressed because
they cannot lose weight. However, hypothyroidism can make you feel depressed and keep you from losing
weight. Food allergies can actually cause you to crave certain foods and
overeat.
My goal is to teach my patients how to do this on
their own so they will be able to stay at a healthy weight without gimmicks. I want them to lose
weight and keep it off by eating healthy and correcting any medical conditions they may
have.
